About the Artist
TJ Gembala is an artist currently studying at the University of Colorado Boulder. As an active musician in the Boulder music scene, the majority of his work focuses on music and the emotions elicited by music, such as the introspective contemplation of the human condition or the rush of living life on the edge. His first experience with making art was designing album and promotional art for his band. Eventually, his focus shifted towards fashion design, looking towards brands such as Brain Dead or Surf is Dad as his main artistic emphasis. Today, his art has an emphasis on graphic design and printmaking, his art is intended to be used for promotional uses such as fashion design and poster making. As a colorblind person, their work is typically only one or two colors, with an emphasis placed on texture and detail work to compensate. Drawing influences from the gritty and dark DIY punk and skate scenes of east coast cities mixed with the organic and fluid surf scene of west coast surf scene, drawing additional inspiration from the maximalist and surrealist movements, TJ Gembala's work synthesizes a multitude of influences and movements to produce a detailed, personal, and inventive artistic aesthetic.
