Artist Statement #1

My artwork is focused on addiction and the propensity to take risks. For the assignment, we were supposed to create characters to be represented in a series of selfies, and I decided to imagine what these qualities would look like if they were conceptualized into a physical character. In order to convey this character, I knew that there were a number of situations I wanted to put them into, such as a fractured image of the character on my own face to establish that the qualities I am describing are present in myself. Additionally, I had planned to make the character visible in the smoke of a drifting car in order to better convey that addiction wasn’t the sole aspect of this character, and that the addictive nature of the character was applicable to risks and adrenaline as well. While initially I intended to utilize the fractured/geometric framework when editing in elements that represented the character, I decided it could get repetitive and be counterintuitive to my learning of the software, and focused on trying to make the elements representing the character blend more fluidly into their environment. Though I was initially concerned that my use of imagery of alcohol and cigarettes could place too much focus on the addiction component of my character, I was happy to hear during critique that my classmates recognized the propensity to take risks within my character as well. In the future, I would hope to further explore blending options and different textures that could be used to better blend images into the background.
