For the digital soundscape project, I began my process by listening to each of the pieces of sample audio provided to try to gather some sense of a theme. A common trend I noticed throughout the samples uploaded by our class was various sounds of water, such as sinks running, water dripping, etc. Eventually, I heard the sound bite of a toilet flushing, which is what gave my main idea for the plot of the soundscape. Hearing the sounds of a person cleaning, followed by the sound of a toilet flushing, I was reminded of the movie flushed away, wherein a pet rat is flushed down the toilet and must travel through the sewers to try and return to his home. The goal I had initially set out for this project in the brainstorming post was to convey multiple settings and characters, so I thought that this model for the plot of the story would help meet those goals. Through the sounds, I try to tell the story of a character who is living their day peacefully, listening to the sounds of nature and outdoors while they read and write in their room. Eventually, someone comes into the room and begins cleaning, disrupting their peace. As the outsider disturbs them, the main character is flushed down the toilet, eventually coming to in a dark and damp sewer. While the environment is threatening, they eventually make their way out of the sewer, where they begin to hear the sounds of nature once again, and are met by friends who bring them home.
