For our first project, the character that I am creating faux selfies for is more conceptual than literal. I am hoping to create a physical manifestation of personality traits and emotions that lie within all of us and cause us to act a certain way. The character which I am attempting to create is the “fiend” in all of us, the small voice in the back of our head telling us to go further and to push our luck a little more, bringing each of us closer and closer to the edge of oblivion. Throughout my life, I have noticed that I have an addictive personality, and in regards to substances such as alcohol or nicotine I struggle to limit how much I consume. It feels like once I begin, I always feel like I should have another drink, and once I finish that one the voice in the back of my head says that I should have another. This voice goes beyond substances, though, it is the urge to take risks and push the limits of what I can do. It’s the voice that tells me to quit my job, drop out of school, move across the world and dedicate myself fully to art and music. It is the urge to live life to the fullest, fastest, most exciting degree, and it is often self destructive and unrestrained. For this project, I hope to structure the “selfies” as a fractured mixture of the face of the “voice” and my own face, possibly in different situations related to the details of what the voice says which I described above. To further flesh out the character, I am conceptualizing the voice as a sort of spirit or deity, older than time and omnipresent in every person in the world, which manifests itself not in a physical form, but possession of the host.
