Brainstorming Blog #2

For Project 2, I am presented with an interesting problem. As a (semi) lifelong musician, my instinct for the creation of a soundscape is to structure it like a song. When listening to the sounds included in the folders, I constantly imagine how they could be applied as various musical instruments. Additionally, I am a huge fan of ambient music like aphex twin, and in similar soundscape music projects in classes I’ve taken in the past, ambient music was unstructured enough to satisfy the guidelines for the project. However, since this project is strictly non-musical, I will have to spend a great deal of time formulating a story and different techniques of telling it. Currently, I am thinking of having a couple of different long stretched out sounds to consist of the setting, with a changing of the background sounds signifying a change in setting. Similarly, I would have shorter, more prominent sounds in the foreground which would signify characters within these settings. However, how I would signify any interaction between the characters would be much more difficult. Perhaps I could make use of the various effects available through audition in order to show a change in the characters. Ultimately, I hope to be able to use sounds structured in the foreground and background changing throughout the progression of the track in order to be able to convey different characters and the settings which they occupy. Even if I can effectively achieve all of these goals, meeting the 4 minute and thirty three second requirement may still be a bit difficult.
